Abstract

Heart failure is one of the cardiovascular disease that give great contributions from all causes of
death in Indonesia. Heart failure can decrease renal perfusion which can stimulate renin-
angiotensin-aldosteron system thus causing increased levels of renin, angiotensin II and
aldosteron. Activation of the Renin-angiotensin-aldosteron system can cause sodium retention and
potassium excretion and water in the kidney. This research was conducted to find out the
correlations between the levels of sodium and potassium levels in serum in diagnosis of heart
failure. The research was carried out in RSU Haji Surabaya in June to July 2014. This type of
research use descriptive research design. The number of samples used in the study as many as 50
determined by selectively sampling. The result of the research are then tested using the
kolmogorov-smirnov and correlation pearson. Based on the result of the research of the correlation
coefficients obtained by -0,169. And the average value of serum sodium levels of 136, 68 mEq/l,
while the average serum potassium levels amounted to 4,28 mEq/l. The conclusions of the study
result i.e. there is no correlation between the levels of sodium and pottasium levels in serum with
correlation coefficient value of -0,169
